The Iranian Journal of Nutritional Sciences and Food Industry is committed to observing ethical principles in research and publishing scientific articles and follows internationally recognized principles and guidelines in the field of publication ethics, including the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
All authors, reviewers, editorial board members and other individuals involved in the publication process are required to observe the principles of honesty, transparency, trustworthiness, confidentiality and scientific responsibility.
Examples of Unethical Behavior
Unethical research and publishing behaviors, as the case may be, can include the following:
Plagiarism: Using the ideas, text, data, results or other scientific achievements of others without proper citation.
Fabrication: Creating or presenting research data and results that were not actually produced or obtained.
Falsification: Unjustified alteration, deletion, or manipulation of data, images, results, or research methods in a way that misrepresents findings.
Duplicate/Redundant Publication: Simultaneous publication or submission of an article or a significant portion of a study to more than one journal without proper disclosure or justification.
Unnecessary division of research results (Salami Publication) with the aim of increasing the number of articles.
Violation of authorship principles: Including the names of individuals who did not make a significant scientific contribution to the study or omitting individuals who are qualified to be authors. Authorship criteria should be determined based on the actual and scientific contribution of individuals.
Failure to declare conflicts of interest by authors, reviewers, or editorial board members.
Manipulation of the review process, including providing false information about reviewers or attempting to improperly influence the review process.
Disclosure of confidential information about the article by reviewers or editorial board members.
Unauthorized use of data, images, tables, or other content belonging to others.
Providing false information about research ethics approval, informed consent, clinical trial registration, or other ethical research requirements.
Any other action that is contrary to the accepted principles of research ethics and scientific publication.
How the journal deals with suspected violations
If a report is received or evidence of research or publication violations is observed, the matter will be initially reviewed by the editor and editorial board. The journal strives to conduct reviews while maintaining confidentiality, impartiality, and the right of accountability of interested parties.
During the review phase, the following actions may be taken, as appropriate:
Requesting clarification and documentation from the author(s).
Reviewing the article, sources, data, and related documents, and using text similarity detection tools if necessary.
In necessary cases, requesting information or reviewing the matter from the institution, university, or organization where the researcher works.
If necessary, suspending the refereeing process or publishing the article until the results of the review are known.
Rejecting the article if violations are found before publication.
Publish a correction when there is a mistake or error that can be corrected.
Publish an expression of concern when there is a serious concern about the validity of the article but the final review has not yet been completed.
Retract when a serious violation or fundamental error has undermined the validity of the findings or conclusions of the article.
Retracting published articles
If, after publication, it is determined that the article contains substantial falsification or distortion of data, extensive plagiarism, duplicate publication, serious manipulation of the refereeing process, fraudulent authorship, or other violations affecting the scientific validity of the article, the journal may retract the article.
In such cases, the retraction notice must be published clearly and linked to the original article. The retracted article is not removed from the journal's scientific records, but is maintained with a clear statement stating "retracted" so that the scientific records and publication history of the article are visible to readers.
Correction of Errors
Not every scientific error is necessarily considered an ethical violation. If an error is identified after publication but the overall validity of the article is still maintained, the journal may replace or supplement the correct information by publishing a correction. In the event of fundamental errors that invalidate the results and conclusions of the article, the possibility of withdrawing the article will be considered.
Right to Reply and Objection
Individuals or authors about whom the violation has been raised will have the opportunity to provide explanations and relevant documentation. The journal's final decision will be made after reviewing the available evidence and documentation and in compliance with the principles of confidentiality and fairness in the review process.
In dealing with cases of violation, the journal, while maintaining the independence of the editor and editorial board, strives to use standard publication ethics processes and internationally recognized guidelines. The journal's policies on research and publication violations should be made transparently available on the journal's website to authors, reviewers, and readers.
