The study on relationship between education, employment and economic status of parents with overweight and obesity in students of primary schools in different parts of Tehran, 2012

Background and Objective: Obesity is a public health problem in costly and increasing its incidence in children is a global problem. Given that obesity is the disease affected by people and the environment ,Therefore ,the study of parental characteristics (education, occupation, socioeconomic status) and lifestyle (fast food intake) to examine its relationship with obesity of children.
Materials and Methods: at This descriptive - cross sectional information such as education, employment and economic status, body mass index 552 parents of elementary school boys and girls in 8 districts from 22 Districts of Tehran (random sampling) were measured. Students' height and weight and BMI (body mass index) was Measured and calculated based on the WHO charts. The data were processed by software spss/ver16.
Results: Among 500 samples, 47.8% were male and 52.2% female ,among boys, 23.9% obese, 12.2% overweight, 59.6% normal weight and 4.3% underweight. Among girls there were 12.5% obese, 14.6% overweight, 67.2% normal, and 5.7% underweight.
Fathers education: 9% Illiterate and elementary education, 54. 2% high school diploma, 28. 4%Associate Degree and bachelor's degree and 6. 2% Masters and higher. mothers education 9% Illiterate and elementary education, 54. 2% high school diploma, 28. 4%Associate Degree and bachelor's degree and 6. 2% Masters and higher. The study of the relationship between economic status and food consumption frequency was pnificant (p=0. 018)
There were not pnificantly correlates Between maternal employment and parental education with students BMI.
Conclusions: Due to increasing levels of parental education and maternal employment and decreasing attention to physical activity and obesity in children, It seems to create awareness about lifestyle can affect reducing obesity.
