Knowledge of Female Students of Kalaleh city about Osteoporosis, calcium intake and physical activity: An Unacceptable Status

Background and Objective: Osteoporosis is a silent epidemic of our times. It is very important issue according to the high rate of mortality and morbidity of women due to this disease and its complications. The most important thing about this disease is that it is preventable. Since adolescent females are high-risk population, the aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of the second grade students in guidance schools about osteoporosis, calcium intake and physical activity. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of type descriptive-analytic that girl students in guidance schools of Kalaleh city in year 2012-2013 constitute study population. Sampling was done through simple random method. Data collection tool is a valid and reliable questionnaire consisted of two parts of demographic data and questions about osteoporosis awareness which consists of two parts of calcium intake and physical activity. After data collection, analysis was carried out through software SPSS16 and using appropriate statistical tests. Participation of individuals in present research was voluntary and with informed consent. Results: Findings of this study showed 57/9% of Students have poor knowledge and 42/1% of them have moderate awareness. Good level of knowledge wasn't acquired by anybody. And just, students had answered a few of questions about the risk factors and prevention of osteoporosis. Conclusion: Level of knowledge among girls population participated in the study, was very low and this is not acceptable which this reminds a serious necessity for planning, implementation and evaluation of educational interventions on osteoporosis among female students of studied region.
