Background & Objective: different studies support the role of nutritional factors as one of the important probable factor in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) etiology. Based on traditional medicine Some food components can play a role in the etiology of (MS). The current case-control study was done in city of Tehran with the purpose of Scientific review of Nutritional beliefs of Traditional Medicine and modern nutrition about multiple sclerosis.
Materials and Methods: In this case-control study that was conducted in 1390 in city of Tehran , the factors such as socio-economic , life style and nutritional intake of 70 MS patients and 140 controls with the same age and gender were collected throughout interview and questionnaire. Based on traditional medicine, Questionnaire items were classified. All the statistical tests were done using SPSS software version 16. For ratio tests logistic regression was used.
Results: After modifying the effects of confounding variables, among 35 food items that were proposed, People who consumed the highest amount of Tuna , Pickle ,Sour cherry and cola had significantly a greater chance of getting affected by MS disease. On the other hand, people with the highest level consumption of tomato and orange had significantly a less chance to get affected by this disease. (P for Trend < 0. 05)
Conclusion: The results of this study and also reviews the existing literature couldn’t show reasonable and scientific support for The hypothesis presented from the perspective of traditional medicine about the role of nutrition in MS
